Primary Purpose: Operates track-mounted rock drilling machine to drill explosives-charge holes through hard materials to facilitate blasting operations.
Typical Duties: Moves drill, compressor, related equipment and materials to position. Inserts steel drill or rock bit into chuck. Moves levers to start, stop, and control drilling speed of machine. Drills holes and observes depth gauge on drill stem to verify depth of hole. Loads explosives, detonates explosives without damage to existing structures. Must be aware of OSHA blasting requirements and perform work accordingly. Must layout work and design a blasting plan. Read plans. Communicate with public and coordinate with project superintendent. Perform other duties as assigned.
Workers should be able to: Work within standards of accuracy; rate information using standards which can be measured or checked; work in dirty and dusty conditions; have valid drivers license; and follow oral and written instructions. Physically, workers should be able to: see well, use hands, arms, and fingers fully; coordinate the movements of eyes, hands, and fingers; stoop; kneel; crouch; lift and carry objects weighing up to 100 pounds; stand or walk for long periods; bend; climb in and out of vehicle; maintain body balance; and use legs fully.
