Lancaster Co—Bridge Over Hanging Rock Creek

September 9, 2017

Project: Lancaster County - Bridge over Hanging Rock Creek

Contract Value - $3,036,000

Owner - SCDOT

Project Manager - Chris Kelly

Superintendent - Shawn Davis

This project located in Lancaster County near the town of Kershaw, SC was an experimental project for the SCDOT as well as for Clemson University.  The structure consisted of one span of 40’ Prestressed Concrete Solid Slab Beams, two spans of 70’ Prestressed Concrete Cored Slab Beams, and one span of the new Prestressed Concrete Next-D Beam, all supplied by Tekna Corporation.

The Next-D beams, which looked similar to parking deck panels, were a new design that the SCDOT wanted to test out on this project as well as the Ultra High Performance Cementitious (UHPC) grout, supplied by LaFarge, used to fill the voids between the beams. The grout contains steel fibers to help strengthen the material and make it more ductile. The UHPC grout has a structural strength 10 times higher than traditional grout.

While placing the grout graduate students from Clemson University came out to the job site and Dellinger created cylinders and cubes for them to take back to their lab for testing.

Overall the project went very well and the SCDOT and Dellinger were very happy with the finished product.
